SGT Shawn M. Farrell II Scholarship Memorial Fund

 

6th Annual Bad Bass Fishing Tournament, Pig Roast, & BBQ

 

Sgt. Shawn M. Farrell II was killed on April 28th, 2014 in Nejrab District, Kapisa Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire while on dismounted patrol. At the time of his death, Shawn was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, New York. He joined the Army in September 2006. After initial-entry training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division of Fort Riley, Kansas. He arrived at Fort Drum in May 2010 and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011 and again in November 2013. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, two Afghanistan Campaign Medals, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Air Assault Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal and a Meritorious Service Award. He completed the Warrior Leader Course, the Combat Life Savers Course and the Air Assault Course. A deserving fund for a true “American Hero”. Fishing was one of Shawn’s passions. Participants and Eligibility

There is no age limit, Participants must be in good standing and sign the liability waiver form before participation in the Bad Bass Tournament. Participants are responsible to ensure valid possession of State and local licenses and permits as required. Entry fee for the tournament is $40.00 per angler 16 and over; $15.00 for 15 and under. Payment must be received prior to the start of the tournament. Registration closes at 11:59pm the night before the event.

 

Tackle and Equipment

All fish must be caught in a legal, sporting manner. Intentional snagging of fish will not be allowed. Artificial lures and live bait may be used. Boaters must be in possession of USCG Approved personal floatation devices.

 

Fishing

All fish must be taken by angling per NYS DEC regulations; anglers are responsible for knowledge of applicable NYS Law. Fish may be taken from any public waters of the State. Tournament begins at 5:00a.m. on July 20th, 2019, fish caught prior to the start time are not eligible for weigh-in. You may fish from bank or boat. All boats may have two (2) participants; additional non-participants are allowed in the boat but may not assist in the taking of bass.

 

Sportsmanship

All contestants are expected to follow high standards of sportsmanship, courtesy, safety, and conservation. Any team who displays poor sportsmanship, violates these rules or any state or local laws or brings unfavorable publicity to the tournament will be disqualified.

 

Individual Scoring

Only small and/or large mouth bass are eligible for weigh in. Each individual may weigh in five (5) bass. No bass may measure less than 12 inches in length, measured on a flat board, used by the weight committee, with the mouth closed and tail compressed. The standings will be determined by the total weight.

 

Tournament standings will be determined by the total weight for the day of the tournament. Each fisherman is required to arrive to the weigh-in by 2:00pm. Any participant/team returning to the checkpoint late will be penalized at the rate of 1 lb. per minute up to 10 minutes. After 10 minutes no weight will be allowed.

 

*Anglers are responsible for cleaning and preserving of fish caught after their weigh-in, cleaning station will be provided at the tournament.

 

Biggest Bass Award

Based on the heaviest weight of a bass caught the day of the tournament.

Rankings and Prizes

The rankings will be based on total weight. If two contestants have the same weight at the end of the tournament the ranking will be determined by biggest bass by weight. Prizes will be determined at tournament based on number of entries and sponsors.
